Internet Marketing and Search Engine Optimization

Within the realm of Internet marketing many phrases are thrown around today such as Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Social Media Marketing (SMM), Online Reputation Management (ORM), Pay-per-Click (PPC) and the all-encompassing and often ambiguous concept of Internet Marketing. My responsibility is to make sure Internet Marketing is not just a “voodoo science” of random “mud against the wall” trials that do nothing but cost much. Internet Marketing can be done well, cleanly and effectively when guided by one that constantly works at understanding this ever-changing and often misunderstood area of marketing. Areas of expertise include:
  • Understanding how search engines work, their history/evolution, ability to see why a drop occurs or a new “trick” will or will not work.
  • Ability to analyze and research keywords and subjects to find those keywords that will bring a client the public desired.
  • Well-versed in what a website must have in place to show up on keyword.
  • Knowledge of what real-world or off-site factors work to increase the client's position above those of competitors (e.g. links, social media buzz, building trust in the website and more).
  • Practical experience and knowledge in staying away from actions that can or will get a client banned and labeled as a spammer.
  • Understanding how businesses should use social networking (not just from the view of an end user). This includes knowledge of the purpose of a particular network, both the large well known ones and niche smaller networks. This includes the associated user-base to ascertain if a client's target public will actually be reached.

MAIN SERVICES

Site Optimization

Optimizing your site in such a way as to assist with better recognition. While basic formatting and implementation of website content is standard and something any search engine professional can assist with, most professionals do not take the time to fully research what your audience is looking for in particular. A direct effort relating to textual optimization as related to what your audience is actively searching for will be addressed specifically in order to result in more precise results with faster and better return on investment.

Keyword Research

With thorough keyword research we can find what people are actually looking for on the Internet. This involves research and study on the subjects related to the client's product. An analysis of competition and client's current positioning to be able to give a prediction on time and effort required to reach top spots on the keywords.

In some cases keywords will be chosen which have a smaller amount of searches, but sufficiently low competition that the client's website can take the top spots with more ease than the keyword with higher competition.

Once the client's site reaches top spots on these keywords and traffic is gotten to the website, keywords can be expanded to bring larger and larger numbers in as we increase the client's site's ability to compete at higher levels.

A large number of related and extremely low competition keywords may be discovered which can be utilized through-out the website internal pages and blog to bring in additional traffic.

Regular review of any newly trending or hot keywords should be done monthly to be able to incorporate this into new pages of the website or new blog posts, etc.

Competition Analysis

Upon selection of the keyword/phrase that we are going to target a complete analysis of the existing competition (top 10 search results) is done. This is done to find out what they are doing that is successful and to also be able to plan what we will need to do to overcome them and gain those top spots.

Website Development

Ideally a website is built with a professional team of people, functions that must be covered are: a designer, a programmer, a copywriter and a search engine optimizer (SEO).

The SEO’s function is to review all design, copy and programming/coding to ensure the client's website will get a beautiful and indexable site built. Before any phase of this process is approved the SEO must review and approve it as well.

While many things can be done with a website it is the SEOs job to make sure everything comes together in such a way that targeted keywords are correctly utilized and the whole website can be indexed by search engines and eventually found under the client's keywords.

Website Usability Development

I also have extensive experience in website usability, in a nutshell this is knowledge on how to put together any sequence of steps a visitor to the client's website will be made to go through.

This can be a customizable ordering system (for example, client sells T-shirts and wants the user to be able to pick color, size, design and what to say on the shirt through an interactive system) or any system which will require the user to make decisions to complete the process.

It is important to know how to structure these items so as not to confuse the user or cause them to give up. My work includes working with the client and programmers to architect the sequence of steps, analysis of where people may be lost and extensive simulated and real-world testing.

Website SEO Audit

Having worked in the industry since 1996 I am familiar with what the current trends are, but also how they change and have a pretty good feel for where things are going. In reviewing the work already done on a website one is looking for danger areas (potential penalties with the existing algorithm or predicted changes) as well as areas of improvement. The overall goals of a Website SEO Audit?

  • Assess how your website is seen be the search engine robots
  • Inspect technical aspects of your website (framework and architecture)
  • Identify keywords based on research into what people are actually searching for
  • Analyze your website's ability to target these keywords
  • Evaluate current linking of your website against your top competitors
  • Identify content opportunities to improve search engine rankings for target keywords
Real-World SEO Factors

Once the client's website is online there are many other steps required to get a good reliable listing on the search engines. The search engines have discovered that it is too easy to influence your own website and much harder to influence what other's say about you, so those factors which are not under your direct control (as much) become an important part of ranking a website.

It is important to implement these well and with a familiarity of the search engines so that the website doesn't end up looking like spam and cause Google or other search engines to devalue (or ban) the site.

There are many different types of actions to be taken, with new ones regularly being discovered or thought up. Key is that these actions are an on-going activity (especially since at least one of the competitive companies is also working on this).

Examples of basic steps that can be done:

  • Links and listings on sites that the target public visit
  • Running competitions/contests or give-aways
  • Social media marketing to be in those places the client's pubic go
  • Pay-per-click campaign set-up and maintained
  • Putting out regular press releases for brand recognition
  • Commenting on other blog and other similar websites to get links back
  • Requesting placement as a guest blogger in popular blogs
  • Contributing to other quality content that links back
  • and more...
